Although a strong case probably can be made for dating Mark’s Gospel earlier than the 70s, it surely cannot be made on the basis of only four pericopes and usage of a single prominent phrase (e.g. ‘son of man’). Fortu- nately, though, and precisely because that stance occupies so little of the book’s ar- gumentative space (it comes like a bolt out of the blue on the work’s last two pages), it does not significantly detract from the value of Casey’s more serious and rigorous arguments concerning the historical Jesus.
