TY - JOUR AU - Rosewarne, Kathleen AB - Pictures like this may just look like a blur, but from analysis of such radar images of the near-Earth asteroid 1986 DA, Stephen Ostro and collegues of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, USA, have confirmed that this asteroid is much more reflective than other radar-detected asteroids. Such high reflectivities are a unique signature of high metal content and provide the first firm evidence for the existence of near-Earth metallic asteroids, in this case with a nickeliron composition (Science (1991) 252 1399).
