TY - JOUR AU - Swanson, John AB - Simon Carson asks when was the last time any of us calculated the acceleration of our car from the forces acting on it (November 1997 p19). I will not answer for motorists, but I have certainly written the relevant equations for my bicycle, to try to understand why my wife and I cannot cycle our tandem uphill as fast as we can on our solo bicycles. I have also tried to calculate how much slower my journey to work would be if I used dynamo lamps instead of battery lamps, whether the dynamo should be mounted in front of the fork or behind it, and whether the gear ratio makes any difference to how steep a slope I can cycle up before my front wheel lifts off the ground. I have even tried to calculate whether my odometer needs recalibrating when I pump my tyres up harder, and whether it is the left or the right pedal that is reverse-threaded.
