R. W. OILLIATT The Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology. 2nd Edition. By J. R. COOPER, F. E. BLOOM and R. H. ROTH. 1974. Pp. 172. Oxford Medical Publications. Price £2.50. The large and rapidly expanding literature in this field makes it hard for the newcomer to pick out the most significant findings or to relate his particular interests to the area as a whole. The second edition of this book contains much new material and remains the best brief introduction to the topic. It deals in a notably clear style with the range of generally accepted neurotransmitters and with relevant subjects such as the roles of cyclic AMP, prostaglandins and histamine. There is a useful general introduction on the properties of nerve cells and the biochemistry of the CNS and short but selective reference lists mainly to more detailed reviews on specialized topics.
