A man who has been-a source of inspiration to such diverse writers as William Law and Nicolas Berdyaev, and has won high praise from historians of mysticism/may not be neglected. Gratitude is there­ fore due to Mr Hobhouse for having brought to light again Bishop Martensen's introduction to Jacob Boehme. An introduction and guide is necessary, for Boehme's works are not easily accessible, and their arrangement and symbolism are so complicated that many will be deterred from trying to comprehend the message he is trying to give unless assistance is forthcoming. It must be admitted, at the outset, that much of Boehme is very difficult, and some is unortho­ dox. Nevertheless, he had what Evelyn Underhill called "a natural genius for the transcendent," and the "inspired shoemaker" is a source of illumination who needs to be rediscovered in every age.
