Abstract

Very often we assume that we know the nature of heritage believing that what it constitutes is shaped cognisant of local value systems and perceptions of identity and a balance of realities of the present against fluid memories of the past. The challenge of balancing these conflicting, constantly shifting, dynamic and contextual values is at the heart of heritage management around the world. In The Nature of Heritage: the New South Africa, Lynn Meskell deals with the challenge of balancing these values, the contradiction of the need to remember the past as well as the desire to forget it and embrace alternative heritages in the new South Africa. Two important publications are probable precursors to this study: Archaeology under Fire: Nationalism, Politics and Heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, considers the positive role of the past, the sociopolitical implications of archaeological and historical narratives as a means of perceiving global interconnectedness and as a tool for reconciliation (Meskell 1998). The other, Negative Heritage and Past Mastering in Archaeology, shows the contradicting values of negative heritage and how, in a South African context, cultural heritage may help come to terms with apartheid (Meskell 2002).
