Miszellen Miszellen l Kor 2 9 a Quotation from the Coptic Testament of Jacob? by H. F. D. Sparks (Oriel College, Oxford) I was much interested in Dr. Eckhard von Nordheim's recent article in ZNW 65, 1974, 112--120, suggesting that St. Paul at 1 Kor 2 9 may have been quoting, not from a lost Elijah apocryphon (as has often been maintained on the basis of statements by Origen and Jerome), but from The Testament of Jacob, the text of which was first published by I. Guidi from Cod. Vat. Copt. 61 in 19001. Nevertheless, I am not convinced for the following reasons: (1) Von Nordheim is quite right in his observation2 that nothing corresponding to 1 Kor 2 9 is to be found in either of the two Elijah apocalypses included by Rießler in his collection of translations of Old Testament apocrypha8 -- i. e. the Coptic apocalypse (edited most recently by Rosenstiehl4) and the Hebrew apocalypse (edited as long ago as 1897 by Buttenwieser5).
