Y. 10028) In Hebrew and in other languages the letters of the alphabet are utilized from time to time äs numerals. This led eventually to the development of a method of homiletic Interpretation of the biblical text known äs gimatria - using the numerical value of the letters of particular words or phrases to arrive at new and creative understandings of the text. Examples of gimatria appear occasionally in the Talmud and other early rabbinic material; in Jewish mystical texts they are very frequent. Though the biblical text is subjected to the methods of gimatria by traditional Interpreters, scholars who approach the Bible from a scientific and historical perspective have stayed far away from such an approach. There are no immediately apparent examples of gimatria in the Hebrew Bible so, from a scientific point of view, there is no reason to assume that any of the biblical writers or redactors ever had gimatria in mind 1 . As a general principle this is doubtless correct.
