DOMAIN RESTRICTION AND OTHER KINDS OF REFERENCE SET OPERATIONS

DOMAIN RESTRICTION AND OTHER KINDS OF REFERENCE SET OPERATIONS Introduction The present paper1 focuses on domain restriction as exemplified by ocplicit exception marking, complement formation without exception narking, and implicit domain restriction. With regard to explicit exception narking and complement formation without exception marking, we extend he analysis by König & Kortmann (1987) on what they call 'absolute omplementation' in a discourse-theoretic direction. The 'additive' function »f 'außer' (to be contrasted with 'neben' ('besides')) will be investigated, and 7e will have a look at 'einschließlich' ('including') under the heading of aclusion (domain set stabilization). One crucial aspect in this paper concerns ion-monotonicity, which allows for conclusions to be no longer derivable if he set of premises is extended. Partiality of this kind has become : flourishing area within logic2. However, emphasis there is mainly laid on he construction of formal systems and the evaluation of their properties. This paper is a condensed and slightly modified version of Mayer (1991b); it is complementary to Mayer (1990b). Implementational hints are left out but can be found in Mayer (1991 a). This work was started at the University of Tübingen and continued at the IBM Scientific Centre, Stuttgart. Cf., for instance, Ginsberg (1987) or Fuhrmann & Morreau (1991). Abstract

Introduction The present paper1 focuses on domain restriction as exemplified by ocplicit exception marking, complement formation without exception narking, and implicit domain restriction.
