LANCASTER* This piece of research traces the evolution of guidelines and principles for the construction of Information retrieval thesauri from 1959 to 1993. We conclude that the majority of the basic problems of thesaurus construction had already been identified and solved by 1967 and that Eugene Wall, more than any other individual, has profoundly influenced the entire development in this area. The evolution of guidelines/standards for the construction of Information retrieval thesauri was briefly discussed by Lancaster (1986); in particular, he attempted to show how one set of guidelines appeared to influence others. The discussion is limited to monolingual thesauri and guidelines in the English language. While previous papers have discussed the development of individual thesauri (e.g., Walker and Mulholland, 1992) we are not aware that anyone has dealt with the evolution of thesaurus principles äs
