The Evolution of Guidelines for Thesaurus Construction

The Evolution of Guidelines for Thesaurus Construction Librl 1993: vol. 43. no. 4, pp. 326-342 Printed in Denmark - all rights reserved Copyright © Munksgaard 1993 ,t , ; ISSN 0024-2667 im DAVID A. KROOKS and F. W. LANCASTER* This piece of research traces the evolution of guidelines and principles for the construction of Information retrieval thesauri from 1959 to 1993. We conclude that the majority of the basic problems of thesaurus construction had already been identified and solved by 1967 and that Eugene Wall, more than any other individual, has profoundly influenced the entire development in this area. The evolution of guidelines/standards for the construction of Information retrieval thesauri was briefly discussed by Lancaster (1986); in particular, he attempted to show how one set of guidelines appeared to influence others. This paper develops this theme in greater detail, tracing the evolution arid refinement of principles for thesaurus construction from the Dupont thesaurus of 1959 to the draft NISO Z39.19-199X of 1992. The discussion is limited to monolingual thesauri and guidelines in the English language. While previous papers have discussed the development of individual thesauri (e.g., Walker and Mulholland, 1992) we are not aware that anyone has dealt with the evolution of thesaurus principles äs http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Libri - International Journal of Libraries and Information Services de Gruyter
