While the Englishconjunction and can serve to connect sentences as well as N P s ,Japanese has distinct lexical items on the surface: to for linking NPsand soslte for conjoining sentences. With regard to sententialconjunction, in addition to the above-mentioned soslte 'and', thereis another possible way to conjoin sentences, namely by inflectingverbs, adjectives, and nominal adjectives. I call this type of conjunction as Inflectional conjunctions. For verbs and adjectives, twoforms are available, which can serve as conjunctions: the gerundiveforms V-te and Adj. -ku-te and the infinitive forms \ M and Adj. -Jcu(cf. (1) and (2)), but the gerundive form -jie is the only possible formfor nominal adjectives (cf.
