Molybdenum (V) Phosphates: Structural Relationships and Classification The structural relationships of eighteen Mo(V) phosphates are presented. The specific geometry of the MovC>6 octahedra is discussed. A classification of these phosphates into three families, involving isolated M0O6 octahedra, [M0O3]«, octahedral chains, and isolated M02O10 units, is proposed. This review suggests that, owing to the great adaptability of MoOö octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra, the chemistry of Mo(V) phosphates promises to reveal a host of interesting structural features. 77 Vol 13. No. 2,1993 1. INTRODUCTION Investigation of the molybdenum phosphates has shown the great ability of the phosphate matrix to stabilize pentavalent molybdenum. Recently, eighteen pentavalent molybdenum [1-18] phosphates corresponding to thirteen different mixed frameworks and one mixed valent molybdenum V/VI phosphate [18] have been synthesized at high temperature and their structure has been determined from single crystals.
