annual awards The recipients of the American Meteorological Society's Awards for 1988 were announced at the Awards Banquet held on 1 February 1989 in Anaheim, California. Roscoe R. Bra- ham, Jr., presided over the presentation at the Banquet. Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal Richard J. Reed, professor in the Department of Atmo- spheric Sciences of the University of Washington, is the 1989 recipient of the Society's most prestigious award, the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal. Consisting of a gold medal and certificate, the award is made in recognition of outstanding contributions to the understanding of the be- havior of the atmosphere. It is being presented to Reed "for major contributions to our understanding of polar lows, tropical waves, and the tropical lower stratosphere." Reed received a B.S. degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1945 and an Sc.D. from the Massachu- setts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1949. Reed began his career in 1942 as an observer and fore- caster for the U.S. Navy. He worked as a research assistant and staff member at MIT from 1947 to 1954.
