"DAXIYANGGUO - COLOQUIO INTERNACIONAL - PORTUGAL MACAU E AS RELA~ÖES EURO PA CHINA" The International Congress "Daxiyangguo - Col6quio Internacional - Portugal Macau e as relafoes Europa China", held in Lisbon, Torre do Tombo, between the 21st and 24th October 1999, was intended to celebrate the restitution ofMacao to the Chinese suzerainty. The formal ceremony was realised, as we know, at midnight between the 19th and 20th December ofthe same year 1999. Centuries of Sino-Portuguese coexistence and cohabitation have characterised the history of Macao, determining the rise of very peculiar aspects and elements in the small settlement, from the historical, political, economic and religious point of view, as weH as with regard to the concrete exercise of suzerainty, because Macao was ruled by two different Countries. Moreover, being one of the most important stopping points of the international routes of East Asia, Macao hosted a multy-ethnic community, especially during the XVI and the XVII Centuries, when together with the Portuguese, also Spanish, Italian, Dutch or Germah missionaries stopped over there, often in order to reach other destinations, that were mainly Mainland China and Japan or back to the Philippines and to the South East Asia.
