ROMANCE LINGUISTICS

ROMANCE LINGUISTICS ROMANCE LANGUAGES I. ROMANCE LINGUISTICS By joHN N. GREEN, University of Bradford I. AcTA, FEsTSCHRIFTEN Though inevitably overshadowed by the earlier publication of what should have been their successors, the proceedings of the I9th triennial congress are now appearing steadily as Aetas (Santiago de Compostela): some 230 contributions are distributed thematically among vols n, m, IV, and v, and a further instalment on Galician is announced (*vi). Studien zum romanisch-deutschen Sprachvergleich, ed. Giovanni Rovere and Gerd Wotjak (LA, 297), Tiibingen, Niemeyer, I993, vii+ 348 pp., assembles papers from colloquia held in I99I in Bamberg and Leipzig, predominantly on aspects of Romance German comparative lexicology, translation semantics, and prag malinguistics. Papers (DeKalb) chronicle the 23rd North American symposium, with 30 articles in two no-nonsense sections, 'Phono logy' and 'Syntax', each imbued with an unmistakable MIT messianic fervour. More eclectic but no less worthy, Penny, Aetas, contains much to interest Romanists, especially in historiography and the linguistic input into the colonization of Romania nova. A rich crop of commemorative volumes, most further discussed below, includes: Fest. Ludtke, with 25 articles on Romance and general historical linguistics; Hommages Manoliu-Manea, largely devoted to discourse and conversational analysis; Melanges Burger, chiefly on medieval philology http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png The Year’s Work in Modern Language Studies Brill
