AcTA, FESTSCHRIFTEN Rarely, in recent times, have the proceedings of one triennial congress been committed to paper before the next took place. Congratulations are therefore due to Jean-Claude Bouvier and colleagues for the timely publication of Actes . .. (Aix-en-Provence), a record spanning nine volumes and over 4,400 pages. Though utilitarian in appearance (being photo-offset from authors' typescripts) and bereft of confer­ ence discussion, the papers cover a bewildering array of themes and show a welcome upsurge of interest in comparative perspectives. Of the volumes not further discussed below, VIII is devoted to stylistics, rhetoric, and poetics, and IX to the editing of texts. A short report on the Ig86 congress at Trier is contributed by I. Vintila-Radulescu in LiR, 35: 458-6o. For the Californian dimension,Jaeggli and Silva-Corvalan, Studies, assemble 24 stimulating papers from the 14th Symposium on Romance Languages, allocated somewhat cryptically to three sec­ tions, 'Spanish', 'French', and 'Other languages', in descending order of rep res entation. 2.
