The occasion was celebrated by two commemorative lectures: R. H. Robins and Victoria Fromkin, Linguistics and Linguis tic Evidence, Newcastle upon Tyne, Grevatt and Grevatt, 38 pp. It was also the centenary of Edward Sapir's birth. His son, J. Daniel Sapir, offers an affectionate memoir in 'Introducing Edward Sapir', LSo, I4: 289-97. Konrad Koerner (ed), Edward Sapir: Appraisals of his Life and Work, Amsterdam, Benjamins, 224 pp., is a selection of obituaries, reviews, and tributes together with a bibliography. Mouton are preparing a I6-volume complete edition ofSapir's works. Mouton's Selected Writing of Romanjakobson has been extended into a Collected Works. Another centenary is anticipated in Peter Howard Fries (ed.), Towards an Understanding of Language: Charles C. Fries in Perspective. Amsterdam, Benjamins, 384 pp., a somewhat mixed collection. Kurt R. Jankowsky, Scientific and Humanistic Dimensions of Language. Festschrift for Robert Lado on the Occasion of his 7oth Birthday, ib., 614 pp., celebrates Lado's contribution to language teaching and is more focused. An abstracting journal for Linguistics is much to be welcomed: Linguistics Abstracts, ed. D. Crystal, Oxford, Blackwell, I985-.
