Barner (WF, 358), 1975, vii + 597 pp., is a superb coll . of essays, arts and excerpts which brings together in compactly readable format a broad spectrum of the more authoritative views and interpretations of the baroque from Wolffiin's 1888 leading question, 'Wo liegen die Wurzeln des Barockstils?', to modern answers from such distinguished cosmopolitan scholars as Rousset, Szyrocki, Spahr and B. himself. On the way we are treated to a wide­ ranging chronological array of more or lesswell-known passages (Croce, Hatzfeld, Curtius, Cysarz, Praz, Angyal, among others) which B. introd. with an admirably concise and informative Einleitung complemented by useful biog. details of the 23 contributors. An anthol. of this kind had long been a desideratum of German and indeed European baroque studies; B. and his publishers have done their job well and made avail­ able a bountiful storehouse of invigorating ideas and insights into this ever-fascinating subject - many hours of concen­ trated and stimulating reading within a relatively mod est compass.
