History of Germany', The Nineteenth Century 1830-1890, London, Benn, xv + 214 pp., is depressingly predictable. Neither an idiosyncratic, sparkling challenge nor a masterful synthetic survey, it relies on the familiar recipe: rag-bag biog. details, hoary anecdote, crit. apen;:us, and clumsy paraphrase. There are factual errors, and F.'s uncertainty about his audience is reflected in the shifting levels. W.
