The book is distinctly bitty because the author's comments, though sometimes interesting, are restricted to individual works. Eugenio Lisboa, Cr6nica dos anos da peste - I, Louren<;o Marques, Academica, 330 pp., consists of essays on various modern authors including Manuel Laranjeira, Regio, Sena and N amora. Jorge de Sena, Dialectic as da literatura, L, Edi<;oes 70, 2 I 3 pp., is a coll. of essays on the theory of lit. *Pedro Mayer Gar<;ao, Digressoes literarias, L, 187 pp. Something of a novelty in Portugal is Jose Tengarrinha, A novela e o leitor portugues, introd. L. de Sousa Rebelo, L, Prelo, xxiii + 257 pp. This is a limited but interesting study of the preferences of the readers of the libraries set up by the Gulben­ kian Foundation.
