Rom., included substantial contributions in medieval Ptg. studies, and the issue of contents lists for the ten vols, xi, 1969, 143-54, is a welcome bibl. aid. M. M. Garguilo surveys the late Augusto Magne's work in medieval studies, RP, xxxiii, I09-16. Discussions of theoretical problems of medieval lit. are rare in Ptg., and must consequently be sought elsewhere. A dis­ cussion which must be taken into account by anyone concerned with the lit. criticism of medieval Ptg. prose is Arthur K. Moore's 'Medieval English lit. and the question of unity', MP, lxv, 285-300. Moore, pugnacious and erudite, challenges the finders of unity to justify themselves theoretically and prove themselves empirically. His outlook is probably too gloomy, but he cannot safely be ignored. A. H. Oliveira Marques, Ensaios de historia med. (Col. Portugalia, 13), L, 1965, 307 pp., reprints seven arts of which the most important as background to lit. studies is 'Ideario para uma historia economica de Portugal na Idade Media', 19-67.
