En studie i svensk dikt och samhiillsdebatt fran Oxenstierna och Almqvist till de fiirsta arbe­ tardiktarna, Tiden, 479 pp. (including a summary in English). 'Statare' were married farm-hands who were paid partly in cash but mainly in the form of a 'stat', i.e. in kind. This arrangement started to emerge at the middle of the 18th c., and by 1870 the 'statare' families comprised more than Ioo,ooo people. In 1945 the system was abolished. F. has set out to investigate the whole history of 'statare' in lit. and in public debate. His present book, which is described in the pre£. as the first half of the investigation, goes up to the period immediately following World War I and thus gives the background of what is, as far as lit. is concerned, the most interesting part of the subject, the emergence in the 193o's of a group of authors-Lo-Johansson, Fridegard, Moa Martinson­ writing almost exclusively on 'statare '.
