MIGLIORINI IRST of all, amongst publications of the second half of 1937 Fand the first half of 1938, we must welcome the appearance of the seventh volume of the Linguistic Atlas by J a berg and Jud and the fifth and sixth volumes of the Linguistic Atlas of Corsica by Bottiglioni. The recognition of Rhetoromansch as the fourth national language of Switzerland (though in a slightly subordinate position to the other three 'national' languages, German, French and Italian, which are the only 'official' ones) has given rise to numerous linguistic, political and controversial studies and articles, only a few of which we can mention. G. Rohlfs and F. Schurr have each given a general conspectus of the dialects of Italian and E. Gamillscheg has considered linguistic in fluences of Germanic peoples in Italy.
