GENERAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL The two vols of Studi in onore di Angelo Monteverdi, Modena, Soc. Tipografica Editrice Modenense, contain a bibl. of his works and a number of articles on medieval French lit. (rev. R, lxxx, 1). The recently formed Societe Rencesvals has publ. its first Bulletin Bibliographique (see section 2). In no. 7 of the Bull. d'information de l'Institut de Recherches et d'Histoire des Textes, 1958, E. Brayer describes the medieval French MSS. at Leningrad. A note written in 1956 by the late L. Foulet and publ. in R, lxxx, 4, suggests a new method of dating 13th c. texts, based on syntax and semantics. An important work not mentioned last year was E. Auerbach, Literatursprache und Publikum in der lateinischen Spiitantike und in der Mittelalter, Berne, Francke, 1958. This has much that is interesting and suggestive on the relations between Latin and vernacular lit. and especially on the roman d'antiquite (rev. E, xii, 5/6). E.
