HISPANIC STUDIES: CATALAN STUDIES IIO C. HISPANIC STUDIES CATALAN STUDIES ByiG.GONZALEZ~LUBERA Language J. CoROMINES contributes an account of the speech of Card6s and Vall Ferrera in the Pallars. The study is based on well-chosen materials from a particularly archaic area of the Catalan domain. Interesting problems are discussed and the hypothesis of the persistence of a pre- Romanic language in that area up to the end of the tenth century is advanced. A map, glossary and index of place-names complete this excellent contribution. The present extension and phonetic characteristics of the apitxat dialect are discussed by M. Sanchis Guarner. The present essay corrects in various points a previous article by the late P. Barnils. The main conclusion reached in the present study is that the apitxat pronunciation is steadily gaining ground in the district around Valencia. The phonetic features of the dialect of Alguer and the relation of that dialect to the language of the mother country are being investigated by H. Kuen. F. de B. Moll examines the Majorcan speech of Es Llombards on the basis of popular songs adequately transcribed. The writer is mainly concerned with consonantic changes caused by contacts between words.
