Jeremy Robbins, The Challenges of Uncertainty. An Introduction to Seventeenth-Century Spanish Literature, Lanham, Rowman and Littlefield, 1998, 160 pp., is an interpretative introduction to the inventive, challenging, and powerful works of Baroque imagination, such as Cervantes, Quevedo, Gracia ´ n, Lope de Vega, Go ´ ngora, Tirso de Molina, Caldero ´ n de la Barca, Vela ´ zquez, and Murillo. R. examines how Baroque creativity responded to an unprecedented sense of uncertainty fostered by developments across Europe, emphasizing major themes, trends, and ideas that justify viewing the century as a separate period, with a distinct identity.
