Abbreviaturen in deutschsprachigen Texten des Mittelalters und der fru ¨hen Neuzeit (GAG, 645), 1997, 237 pp. This work, based on a detailed examination of over 700 medieval and early modern manuscripts, discusses the development of abbrevi- ations in German-language texts in the context of the overall evolution of forms of writing. Though the study is not primarily designed as a reference work, the copious list of abbreviations (40–153) will be a useful palaeographical aid. Friedrich-Carl Stechow, Lexikon der Stammbuchspru ¨che. Stechow’s Stammbuchspru ¨che-Schlu ¨ssel, Neu- stadt an der Aisch, Degener, 1996, xiv + 286 pp., proposes a variety of solutions to the meaning of the many entries in Stammbu ¨cher of the 16th–18th cs which are given as initials only. Josef Ijsewijn and Dirk Sacre ´, Companion to Neo-Latin Studies. ii. Literary, Linguistic, Philological and Editorial Questions (Supplementa Humanistica Lovaniensia, 14), Leuven U.P., xiv + 562 pp., is a completely rewritten second edition of this essential tool.
