GERMAN STUDIES: THE CLASSICAL ERA German Studies 789 THE CLASSICAL ERA By Da vid Hi ll , Senior Lecturer in German, University of Birmingham It is symptomatic of the changing status of the print medium that this year’s entry must take note of the new CD-ROM series Reclam Klassiker auf CD-ROM, Stuttgart, Reclam, which includes for our period: Goethe, Faust. Der Trago ¨die erster Teil, 1995, Die Leiden des jungen Werther, 1995, and Iphigenie auf Tauris; Lessing, Nathan der Weise; Schiller, Wilhelm Tell and Kabale und Liebe. With the correct equipment the user is not only able to access and copy the text and a range of hyperlinked material relating to it, including context-specific notes and an interpretative essay, but can also hear the text (without stage- directions) spoken by a single actor — except in the case of Faust, where only selections from the dialogues between Faust and Mephis- topheles are available. Each of these CD-ROMs links material hitherto dispersed over a number of books, but the technology makes this a new resource, and of particular value is the ability to search for occurrences of words, although limited here by the use of modernized orthography.
