Book Reviews 463 Elena Conde and Sara Iglesias Sánchez (eds), Global Challenges in the Arctic Region: Sovereignty, Environment and Geopolitical Balance (London/New York: Routledge, 2017) 464 pp. This collection of essays is the main outcome of the research project “The Race for the Arctic: Issues of International Law Arising in the Light of Climate Change” conducted under the direction of Elena Conde, which was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The individual con- tributions are closely interrelated and gathered around five central issues, namely (1) sovereignty, (2) governance, (3) human dimension, (4) environment and resources, and (5) geopolitics and security. In the words of the editors, the objective of the book is “to provide a genuine representation of the legal and political complexity of the Arctic, bringing together relevant and inter - connected discussions about this region” (p. 2). It can be stated from the outset that this objective has been achieved in a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating manner. While predominantly focusing on international law issues related to the Arctic, the book also includes aspects that are examined from a broader, governance-oriented perspective.
