THE L0L IN BRIEF The International Ocean Institute was founded in 1972 by Professor Elisabeth Mann Borgese as a knowledge-based, non-governmental, non- profit international organization devoted to the sustainable development of the oceans. It operates through the activities of its Headquarters in Malta and Operational Centres in twenty-five countries around the world. Its establishment was a milestone in the struggle to enhance, promote, and advocate the peaceful and sustainable uses of ocean space and coasts, as well as the management and conservation of the ocean so that future generations can share in their benefits. Pacem in Mar�bus is the Institute's motto. As a non-governmental body with consultative status at the United Nations and some of its Specialized Agencies, the International Ocean Institute works to uphold and expand the principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea-namely that the seabed and the ocean are the common heritage of humankind for the benefit of humankind as a whole, with particular consideration of the poor.
