ReportfromtheMarinePolicyCenteroftheWoodsHoleOceanographic Institution* The Marine Policy Center (MPC) of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) conducts social scientific research to advance the conservation and man- agement of marine and coastal resources. The usefulness of such research depends upon its grounding in the best available scientific information. The work of MPC scholars integrates economics, policy analysis, law, and statistics with WHOI's basic strengths in the ocean sciences. Among the small number of research centers world- wide that apply social scientific and legal scholarship to the many policy issues involv- ing the world's oceans and coastal areas, MPC is distinguished by its strong economic and quantitative orientation, its close interaction with ocean scientists, and its inde- pendence from university affiliation. Since its founding in 1971, the MPC has been serving society and the policy- making process by conducting independent research, identifying emerging policy issues, emphasizing the importance of scientific results in public policy decisions, and fostering international cooperation through collaborations with foreign schol- ars and governments. The MPC research staff enjoys national and international rec- ognition as an authoritative source of high-quality policy research, as evidenced by its invited participation in National Academy panels and other national and interna- tional advisory bodies. Abstract

The Marine Policy Center (MPC) of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) conducts social scientific research to advance the conservation and man- agement of marine and coastal resources.
