There are interesting ideas here. This reviewer w a s taken with Shlapentokh's aware- n e s s of abstract, symbolic writings on the French Revolution a s c o m p a r e d to r e s e a r c h and more carefui study, and also with the "Christ image" of revolutionary sacrifice and the mistrust, s h a r e d by many, of mankind's search for an ideal s o c i e t y - s o m e t h i n g that con- servatives believed should b e left to the hand of God. But this book attempts to do too much with the result that it is a d e n s e read and not always a satisfying one. The author h a s bitten off a great deal to chew.
