RICHARD WAGNER AND THE MODERNIST THEATRICAL AESTHETIC* BERNICE GLATZER ROSENTHAL R I C H A R D W A G N E R A N D T H E M O D E R N I S T T H E A T R I C A L A E S T H E T I C * Of the many influences on Russian modernism, that o f Richard Wagner's was among the most pervasive. His ideas on a transformed theater commingled with other influences, both Russian and West European, and were interpreted and adapted by different persons and groups to suit their own preferences and concerns. To chronicle so pervasive an influence as that o f Wagner is simply impossible in the space alloted to me.1 Therefore, I will limit my- self to discussing Wagner's impact on prominent figures of three groups, which, although distinct, influenced one another, namely Ballet Russe, mys- tical symbolism, and the revolutionary left. At no point will I argue that Wag- ner was the sole influence o f these groups; this article is simply an attempt to extract out and focus on his influence and to indicate the diversity o f his appeal.
