When it comes to the Balkan problems and the solutions for it, a p r i o r cultural contexts usually dictate the discussion. In the Wake of the Balkan Myth is an attempt to educate both the Balkan and non-Balkan audience on the origins, character and consequences of the Balkan myth. The "Balkan" in the title may be somewhat mis- leading, for this work is really a study of the Balkan myth as it relates to the Serbs rather than all ethnic groups throughout the peninsula. The work is both a history and a critical textual study of the tension between, as the author terms it, "primitivism and civilization" represented in Serbian and Western literature of the last two centuries. Most literary selections, however, are from Serbian authors. Norris's objective is to address "issues concerning identity in terms of Balkan and non-Balkan cultures, and continue by examining questions of modernity and the ever-present dread of primitiv- ism which is highlighted in
