Abstract

Books: Germany 44S and the index which Lofgren has provided is the most important part of the work for the reader. This index furnishes us with an invaluable repertory of tribes and clans known to the tradition of Hamdani's day, and is a fascinating source of com parison both for the student of epigraphic South Arabian and for those who concern themselves with the tribal structure of present-day South Arabia. Proper names in a unique ms. always cause acute difficulties, and a work con sisting of nothing but proper names is one of the most difficult assignments an editor can take on. But Lofgren is to be congratulated on the exactness of his editorial technique, inasmuch as he has given us a careful apparatus criticus re cording the precise form occurring in the ms., distinguishing letters which in the ms. are completely devoid of diacritical marks, from those cases where ihmiil is explicitly indicated by one of the devices common in mediaeval Arabic mss. The first few pages of his introduction contain a particularly clear account of these devices, and can be recommended as of special use to beginners in Arabic palap-o graphy.
