ADDENDA TO THE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF JOHANN SEBASTIAN MITTERNACHT MISZELLEN William Ashford Kelly ADDENDA TO THE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF JOHANN SEBASTIAN MITTERNACHT! Michael Batts' description of the seventeenth century as a bibliographical terra haud cognita, whose exploration presents more difficulties than earlier or later periods, has been echoed recently by Harold Jantz's encouraging conviction that much of the published work of German baroque writers, irrespective of its narrowly literary value, remains to be discovered, and that often in unlikely or previously unconsidered places. 2 The truth of Jantz's conviction can be demonstrated in the case of Johann Sebastian Mitternacht, a significant number of whose publications fall into the bibliographical twilight zone of dissertations, occasional poems, etc. which were not advertised in the book trade. The substantial addition to Mitternacht's bibliography which is presented here adds nothing to our appreciation ofhis poetical skills, but is of value for the information which it provides on his activities as headmaster of the school at Gera. Among the still largely unconsidered repositories of German baroque imprints is the National Library of Scotland, which in its present form dates only from 1925, but which goes back to the 1680's, when the Faculty of Advocates established their own library.
