The first eleven essays are dedicated to the history of legal consultation (futya) in medieval Islamic West and the application of relevant fatwas (religious opinions) in qadi courts during that period. They present case studies covering a wide array of topics, including legal minority, guardianship, divorce, inheritance, bequests, familial politics, women and divorce, law and custom, and endowments. The final essay focuses on the colonial impact on the history and development of the Islamic legal system in the Maghrib. Emphasis is placed on western scholarly attacks on Muslim family endowments in Algeria and India at the end of the th and beginning of the th centuries.
