Book Fair Anime David Attwooll Book Fair Anime David Attwooll The Fair is open to the general public on Saturday Frankfurter Buchmesse Katalog Behind glass, the inspector in his yellow waistcoat glowers. Visitors have become the exhibits: a phantasmagoria of teenage samurai, whey-faced Goths, figures from manga, fantasy, and graphic novels; translated Transylvanians, baby dolls, mutant woodland creatures with pointy ears and punk haircuts in pink or green; southern belles and space warriors. Pages on stands empty as the characters slip their borders like wolves crossing snow-covered passes at night. Now they photograph each other in the sunlight and flirt, toying with light sabres, wands, and pennants, eating ice cream, and holding down flounced skirts. They move with awkward grace, uncertain in strange shoes, gravely courteous as new immigrants. ‘Book Fair Anime’ first appeared in Surfacing (smith/doorstop, 2013) and is reprinted with thanks to the publisher.
