MISIR / EGYPT The National Library of Egypt has decided to issue a regular catalogue or to reprint the titles of the newly acquired books from now on. As this biggest library of the Arabic speaking Orient will certainly procure all the important Arabic books which will be issued in print, these catalogues of new acquisitions will be most valuable for all persons interested in the Arabian literature. Therefore, this enterprise should be welcomed with great gratitude. The first volume, which is before me, lists the Arabian acquisitions made in 1948. During that year, 197 Arabian manuscripts, 4119 Arabian and other Oriental printed books, and 3228 European books, mostly English and French, in total 7544, had been acquired. The reprints of titles contain all essential bibliographic data and the marks; in some cases, however, the date of the publication was omitted. The manuscripts, which are not listed under a special head, arc described more in detail with incipit, date, remarks concerning the authors, and a short material description. The great number of photographs of manuscripts, mostly of the library of Al-Azhar, is remarkable. The order is systematic; the titles of the books are arranged alphabetically within the single parts. An index of authors and titles helps the reader to find a specific book. We congratulate the Dar al-kutub to have started this very useful enterprise.
