SALAVAT M. ISKHAKOV (Moscow, Russia) THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF MUSLIM PEASANTS IN R USSIA: THE DYNAMICS OF CHANGE, 1905-1920 In the early twentieth century, Russia's Muslim peasantry numbered around thirty million; yet the mentality of this group - and particularly its legal consciousness, the focus of this article - has received scant attention in the scholarly literature. This article examines changes in Muslim peas- ant consciousness in connection with the agrarian question; Muslim un- derstandings of the concepts of social violence and equality; and the influ- ence of ethnic conflicts on Muslim value systems. It discusses the reasons behind the widespread transformation of Muslim consciousness occurring over this period, as well as examining some of the typical manifestations of this transformation, with a view to gaining an understanding of the deeper processes that were taking place in the minds of the Muslim masses of Russia from 1905 to 1920.' One of the most complex issues at stake here is the specificity of how Muslim peasants understood the con- cept of individual rights - a concept which, for Muslims, has always been connected primarily with issues of freedom of conscience.
