BRITA MALMER (Stockholm, Sweden) SOME OBSER VA TIONS ON THE IMPORTATION OF BYZANTINE COINS TO SCANDINAYIA IN THE TENTHAND ELEVENTH CENTURIES AND THE SCANDINA VIAN RESPONSE In 1980, Thomas S. Noonan published an important paper, "'The Circula- tion of Byzantine Coins in Kievan Rus'."' It was followed by an equally im- portant, but unfortunately still unpublished, paper - "The Circulation of Byz- antine Coins in medieval Poland and Polabia", - a copy of which I am privi- leged to have in my possession. In these papers, Noonan notes the frequent occurrence of coins belonging to Constantine VII in Polish hoards and the similarly frequent occurrence of coins of Basil II in hoards from medieval Rus'. Noonan presents convincing conclusions concerning the export of Byzan- tine coins to the north and the reasons for their varying circulation in Poland and Russia. With reference to Noonan's Byzantine papers, I will (1) add some observations concerning the inflow of Byzantine miliaresia further to the north - into Scandinavia - and (2) give a brief outline of the Scandinavian response; that is, the Scandinavian imitations of Byzantine miliaresia, espe- cially in the period ca. 995-1030. 1.
