Industrialization in the Habsburg Monarchy: Some Comments THOMAS F. HUERTAS (New York, U.S.A.) Industrialization in the Habsburg Monarchy: Some Comments The four articles presented here amply illustrate the relevance of the eco- nomic history of the Habsburg Monarchy to some of the central problems of social science-the relationship between economic growth and political mod- ernization, the nature of the industrial revolution, and the transmission of economic growth to new areas. Although a lack of data still hampers studies in the field, over the past de- cade scholars have made significant strides in the measurement of the magni- tude and timing of economic growth in the Habsburg Monarchy during the last century of its existence. David Good has succinctly summarized the results of this research and catalogued the contributions of various scholars to the major issues concerning economic growth in the monarchy. More importantly, his article isolates some key areas for future research. The other articles provide insights concerning two significant themes re- lating to the political economy of the Habsburg Monarchy.
