Laying the Lie of the “Boer” Language: An Alternative View of the Genesis of Afrikaans ACHMAT DAVIDS Laying the Lie of the "Boer" Language: An Alternative View of the Genesis of Afrikaans One of the major cultural fears of many white Afrikaners is the future of Afrikaans in a new political dispensation. The language has ac­ quired a negative political image. Afrikaans is seen as the language of Apartheid and as the vehicle through which the oppressive racial laws of the National Party regime were transmitted. It was the im­ position of the language on non-Afrikaans speaking black people which sparked the Soweto uprising of 1976 and the rapid move to­ wards poli~ical change in South Africa. Ironically, virtually at the same time a language for black liberation was sought when the lan­ guage was used to urge people to identify with "Soweto" and ulti­ mately to become involved in the" struggle" against Apartheid. Fears for its existence in a "new South Africa" ignore the reality that Afri­ kaans is equally the language of a vast section of the black oppressed. But Afrikaans also played an important role in the making of the white Afrikaner volk or nation.
