In Memoriam Georg Geilke

In Memoriam Georg Geilke In Memoriam Georg Geilke Professor Georg Geilke, director of the Department of East European Law (seminarabteilung fEr Ostrechtforschung) of the University of Hamburg, died on 10 April of this year. He was bom in 1920 in Lodz and studied law in what was then Breslau and later in Vienna. For a short period he then worked in the East European Institute in Breslau. After the war, where he was seriously wounded, he moved to the Federal Republic, like many other ethnic Germans born on Polish territory. He practised law for some time in Oldenburg and then accepted an invitation to join the Hamburg Law Faculty in 1955. There he started to build up East European law studies and founded the journal WCo-Monatshefte für osteuropdisches Recht. The center which he led acquired an excellent reputation, particularly for its library and its ex- tensive bibliographical resources. In Geilke's own work the emphasis was ini- tially on Polish law, but in 1966 he published an Einführung in das Sowjet- recht. This work was a remarkable achievement in that it combined compact- ness, flawless documentation, and balanced insight. An updated second edi- tion appeared in 1983. On account of the language factor, Geilke's work was perhaps not as well known outside Germany as it deserved to be; also, during the later years of his life, Geilke was rarely to be seen at scholarly meetings outside his home base. Those who had the privilege of having been in contact with him will remember him for his devotion to scholarship and the generous assistance he provided to the research of others. F.J.M.
