Abstract

132 BOOK REVIEWS and changes presented by Malakhov, however, deserve to be made available to systematists world- wide. This carefully prepared and almost error-free translation fulfils that function and provides a very useful review of Russian literature pertinent to this area. As important, is the excellent reproduction, and hence availability, of the many original electron micrographs and line drawings prepared by Professor Malakhov and used to illustrate his book. Rcadcrs of this translation may wish to have a copy of Bird & Bird (The Structure qf Nematodes. New York: Academic Press, 316 pp., 1991) available for reference to present day concepts, approaches and literature. Nevertheless, this translation is highly recommended and is available at a very reasonable cost. S. E. SPIRIDONOV and D.J. F. BROWN BOOK REVIEWS Die Tierwelt Deutschlands, 68. Teil: II. Strongylida: Strongyloidea und Ancylostomatoidea. 1994. Gustav Fischer, Jena, Germany. 157 pp., 170 Figs, 98 DM. This book is the second one in the same series, the first onc (1975, by the same author) treating the Rhabditida and Ascaridida. The classification of Chabaud (1965) is used which includcs five superfamilics in the Strongylida; the book deals with only two of them. It contains the diagnoses and the habitats of the several animal parasites found (or expected to be found) in Germany. Keys are provided so that identification can continue to species level. All species are well illustrated. A list is given of birds and mammals with their strongylid parasites. E. GERAERT
