CROLL (1977). Sensory mechanisms in nematodes. Ann. Rev. Phytopathol. 15, 75-89. N. A. Croll, a very active contributor to this field himself, has written a concise review of one the most rapidly expanding areas of nematology today: 51 of the 67 articles cited were published after 1969, 29 of which appeared in 1975 and 1976. Subjects covered include neuromuscular organization, cephalic muscle attachments, sexual differentiation of the anterior nervous system, pharynx-central nervous system organization, neurotransmitters, correlations between behaviour and anatomy, and orientation mechanisms. Recently published results as well as some personal communications are briefly reviewed for each of these subjects; however, insufficient information exists at the present to permit development of an overall hypothesis on the mechanism of tactic orientation. As Croll pointed out, data on sensory mechanisms in nematodes continues "to flood in", and it is hoped that many of the gaps of knowledge that he indicated will be filled in the near future. Nevertheless, this is a timely review and will be of value to other disciplines and not only to nematology.
