TRICHOTYLENCHUS FALCIFORMIS N.G., N.SP., (BELONOLAIMINAE N. SUBFAM.: TYLENCHIDA THORNE, 1949) AN ASSOCIATE OF GRASS ROOTS (HYPARRHENIA SP.) IN SOUTHERN TANGANYIKA BY A. G. WHITEHEAD East African Agriculture and Forestry Research Organisation, Kenya, Africa Examination of nematodes obtained by the Baermann Funnel tech- nique from a mixture of the roots and surrounding soil of a grass (Hy- parrhenia sp.) collected at mile 40 on the Songea to Tunduru road, Southern Province, Tanganyika Territory, disclosed a few adults and several larvae of a new nematode genus and species - Trichotylenchus f alci f orvnis n.g., n.sp. Although T. falcif ormis shows striking differences from other mem- bers of the family Tylenchidae Filipjev, 1934, it shares with Belono- laimus Steiner, 1949 a number of important characters. It is therefore proposed that a new subfamily Belonolaiminae be erected to receive both genera, which as will be shown, are not readily accomodated in any of the existing subfamilies. Belonolaimus is preferred as type genus of the new subfamily not only on account of its earlier description but because it is more widely known (RAU, 1958). Belonolairninae n. subfam. Diagnosis : Tylenchidae Filipjev, 1934 (sensu Thorne, 1949). Body long in relation to its width;
