The Production of Root Diffusate By Potatoes Grown in Water Culture THE PRODUCTION OF ROOT DIFFUSATE BY POTATOES GROWN IN WATER CULTURE BY ELISABETH WIDDOWSON Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpenden, Herts., England As an alternative to growing potatoes in sand or in soil for root diffusate collection, attempts have been made in three experiments to produce it directly by growing them in a small volume of nutrient solution or water, according to the method by D'HERDE, KIPS & VAN DEN BRANDE ( 1956) . The same methods of plant culture and diffusate assay were used throughout. MATERTALS AND METHODS Tubers of the variety Arran Banner each 11/2 oz. in weight were grown in pots of sand. A few days after emergence of the shoots, selected plants were shaken out of the pots, the roots were washed, and each plant was placed over one litre of nutrient solution in a jar of 1,250 ml. capacity. The plants were supported by mounts made from "Halna" plant pots, which are manufactured from a bitumastic and paper mixture (See Fig. T ) .
