At the Core of Hobbes' Thought At the Core of Hobbes' Thought* GIUSEPPE SORGI This is the third initiative promoted by our University to gather together Italian and foreign scholars on the subject of Hobbes studies. After two series of seminar courses - "Politics and Law in Hobbes"' in 1989 and "Hobbes between Absolut- ism and Liberalism"2 in 1990 - here we are at the present congress whose aim is to consider Hobbes' system as a fundamental paradigm for the understanding of modem political thought. It being my duty to say a few words of introduction, I thought it best to sum- marize my personal experience with work on Hobbes. After setting out on a brief, limited inspection of studies on Hobbes, I was struck by the diversity of interpre- tations that clashed over many - too many - not always marginal points of his theory. It began to seem imperative to me to find out why there were so many divergent and contrasting interpretational positions held by reputable scholars. I was surprised to find myself becoming aware that often the upholders of two op- posing interpretations appeared to be armed with extremely conclusive argu- ments.
