Contributors CONTRIBUTORS Eltje Aderhold , Dr. jur., worked in the Permanent Mission of Germany to the OSCE in Vienna from 2003 until 2005, covering i.e. the human dimension and Central Asia. Currently she is scientific coordinator of the working group on international policy and human rights of the Green Parliamentary Group in the German Bundestag. Prior to these assignments she worked as a lawyer by formation and career diplomat in Afghanistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Geneva (German Permanent Mission to the UN ) and Vietnam. Arie Bloed is former Executive Director of the Constitutional and Legal Policy Institute ( COLPI ), Budapest, and Editor-in-Chief of Security and Human Rights . Tim Epkenhans studied Iranian and Islamic Studies in Munster, Bamberg, Cairo and Tehran. After working as an assistant professor for Iranian studies at the University of Bamberg (Germany) he was assigned to the German Embassy in Dushanbe (Tajikistan). In 2004 he was appointed director of the OSCE Academy in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan). Since March 2009 he is professor for Islamic studies at the University of Freiburg (Germany). Daan Everts is a former senior Dutch diplomat and has served in various capacities in development and security missions of UN , EU , OSCE and NATO , both at Headquarters (New York, Rome, Vienna) and in the field (in ex-Yugoslavia, Albania. Kosovo and Afghanistan). Jeff Goldstein is a 25-year veteran of the United States Foreign Service, having served in the American embassies in Warsaw, Seoul, Moscow and Tallinn, as well as in several positions in Washington DC . He has extensive experience in human rights work and conflict resolution. Currently he manages programs at the Freedom House. Daniyar Kanafin is a defense lawyer of the Almaty Defense Bar Association, member of Association’s Board, and member of Kazakhstan’s Defense Attorney Union Board. He acted as an instructor, senior instructor, associate professor, department head and faculty dean at different universities of Kazakhstan. Walter Kemp is Speechwriter and Spokesman at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. From 1996 to 2006 he worked for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe ( OSCE ), including as a Senior Adviser to the High Commissioner on National Minorities. As a Senior Adviser in the Office of the OSCE Secretary General he provided support to OSCE Chairmanships. He is also editor of Security and Human Rights . Oskar Lehner has been working for the UN , OSCE and EU in the field of Human Rights, institution building, and election in Central- and South East Asia, the Balkans and Central-/West Africa. Sabine Machl works as Senior Adviser to the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in the Hague since 2007. She has been with the OSCE in different positions for over nine years, including as Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek and the OSCE Mission to Estonia, as Senior Mission Programme Officer in the Conflict Prevention Centre in the OSCE Secretariat and as Adviser on Central Asia and the Baltic States in the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the year 2000 during the Austrian OSCE Chairmanship. Erica Marat is a Central Asia analyst. During 2006-2008, she worked at the Joint Center Institute for Security and Development Policy & Central Asia - Caucasus Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. She is an author of numerous analytic and journal articles. Neil J. Melvin is Senior Adviser to the Secretary General of the Energy Charter Secretariat. Herbert Salber served as Deputy Head of the Mission of Germany to the OSCE from 1996 to 2000, as Head of the OSCE Centre in Almaty and subsequently as the Special Advisor to the OSCE Chairman-in-Office on Central Asia. He then served as the Head of the Economic department at the German Embassy in Moscow, inter alia, before returning to the OSCE in 2006 to take up his current capacity as the director of the OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre in Vienna. Nina Suomalainen worked in 2008 as Senior Adviser to the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in the Hague. Before that she worked at the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and at the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has over 15 years of experience working in international relations. Alexander Vinnikov is the Central Asia adviser to the NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, based at NATO Headquarters' Political Affairs and Security Policy Division. Prior to this he served as a Policy Officer for Central Asia at the OSCE Secretariat's Conflict Prevention Centre, and as a researcher in International Relations at Oxford and Harvard Universities. Andrei Zagorski is a Leading Researcher of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations ( MGIMO -University) and has served as advisor to a number of Soviet delegations at the CSCE . He was Vice Rector of MGIMO , Senior Vice President and Project Director of the EastWest Institute, Faculty member of the Geneva Center for Security Policy and Deputy Director of the Institute for Applied International Research in Moscow. Yevgeniy A. Zhovtis is Director of the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and the Rule of Law NGO . He has an extensive track record as a human rights defender.
